This is about the second worst proposal I've ever seen (second to the USATF mascot). The focus is not about winning teams anymore, it's about non-qualifying losers. This proposal only benefits bubble teams, teams who have no chance of a significant place at NCAA's. Top teams wouldn't even have to run their top runners because they could easily qualify, so the regional races aren't going to draw much interest upfront. And what interest is there going to be on teams who qualified for NCAA's by placing in the 5th through 10th range? If you qualified 1st or 2nd in a weak regional at least you'd still have a dream of placing well, and that's enough to draw interst.
The NCAA championships and other playoff systems were designed to recognize WINNERS, and any kind of format that deviates from that focus is going to do nothing but diminish interest in the sport abroad. The fact that the sport can't come up with a decent format where people won't continue to look for major changes says alot about the poor leadership and lack of intelligence the sport endures.
Basically, the NCAA is going to hae their schools waste perhaps as much as 1 million dollars combined on an extra qualifying meet just so they can attempt to ensure that teams ranked beyond the 20th place make the NCAA meet???? You've got to be joking. I could understand the process needing change if top 5 or 10 teams were frequently left out. But this is ridiculous. Even if they did change to this format, there's always going to be the scenario where teams #11 through #15 could have made the top 10 in another Super-regional. This is far worse than the current system in place.
I believe that in a system that allows multiple qualifiers from one site then the # of advancers should equal the number of trophies given out, and up to the number of individuals who are awarded individual medals. So if the NCAA gives out 4 tropies at NCAA championships then 4 teams should qualify from each of the qualifying races. As long as the system allows that then it is FAIR. This is the way that I would format the NCAA championships:
1. 8 Regionals; regionals balanced out with an equal number of teams plus or minus one, and teams assigned to each regional based on location.
2. Top 4 teams from each regional plus any individual not on a team who finishes in the top 25. (I'm not sure but I think the current NCAA meet gives out 4 team trophies and 25 individual medals).
It's that simple. From there the best way you can make sure the top 32 teams are represented is seeding teams and assigning them to different regionals according to their seeds (i.e. NCAA basketball tournament) after all the conference meets are over. Teams no longer have to attempt to peak for mid-season meets or race injured top runners to attempt to gain qualifying points. All of their training becomes focused on peaking for their post-season meets. That's is the only way it should be.
But in my opinion, the fact that the leadership is even considering a proposal as such, reflects more of the lack of intelligence consistent with USATF leadership (i.e. Mascot). It won't take long before they realize their dumb idea did nothing to better the sport but rather make it worse.
