Yes, doing ab workouts in the gym helps. But, abs are still made in the kitchen.
So you are saying I should do my crunches in the kitchen? Great tip, thanks.

Yes, that is the problem. I want it both. I want to run a sub 2:40 marathon in the next couple of years, and get ripped (not buff, but skinny ripped) at the same time.
For example, how does Dean Karnazes manage to keep such a nice body, considering he runs quite a lot. Just genetics? Or is it because he runs mostly at a slow pace?

I would think if your doing the work to run a 2:40 the handles will take care of themselves.

IMPOSSIBLE!! (obviously kidding)
And look at that picture of Lomong! Apparently doing lots of cardio above 70% max HR doesn't make you fat after all. Cult_Fit....care to weight in on this?
And Goucher:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3014/2614907094_88b6e23056_z.jpg?zz=1And Meb:
http://www.eritrea-chat.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/meb-Keflezighi-with-both-flags-400x250.jpgAnd so many others. Look at any pic of any top women's middle distance race, and now that they all show their stomachs with their bra-and-panties uni's/kits, all you will see (ok, 9 out of 10 runners) is a ripped, lean mid-section.
Virtually ALL of these runners do lots of fairly long, fairly hard (above 70% HR) aerobic running (along with intervals/high intensity stuff and easy runs, and of course strength/core training too) and most eat a fairly high carb diet.
Now according to cult_fit and many others on here too (sometimes Alan suggests as much), they should all be FAT (well "skinny fat"). Instead.....LOOK AT THE PICTURES! Meb, Goucher, Lomong, Webb and tons of other middle/distance runners are extremely lean and ripped. And they are not outliers.
So as others have repeated on here:
Good genes matter (these guys/gals have them), but all things being equal:
doing lots of cardio and eating a fairly high carb diet will not make you fat, if you are not overeating calories (need a caloric deficit to reduce body fat), and mixing in good amounts of protein and good amounts of strength/core/bodyweight exercises. In fact, it's probably the best prescription for getting lean.
