Jordan Hasay PBs (8:50.21) but gets smoked in last lap in 3k

Jordan Hasay ran an indoor 3000 pb of 8:50.21 (outdoor pb is 8:46.89) in the 3000 at the Sainbury meet in the UK to place third but struggled when it came time to kick for glory.

At 2k, shortly after American Liz Costello stopped rabbiting, the race turned quickly turned into a 3 person race. The pace then picked up after basically two 3 minute ks and at the bell it was a 3 person race.

Hasay went backwards on the final lap and was well beaten. The top 3 runners were all about 3-4 meters apart at the bell with Hasay in second but she ended up a well-beaten third after a 33 high/34 flat last 200 (69.5ish last 400).

That's the way it always has been and it seems the way it will continue to be. Hasay is a great athlete but her lack of a kick and finishing speed is what holds her back from breaking into the elite ranks. Compare her with Jenny Simpson whose kick is a thing of beauty. I saw Jenny's race in Boston a couple of weeks ago. She was 4 seconds off AR pace with 400 meters to go, and she finished 4 seconds better than the AR. Her final lap was a few ticks over 27. It was amazing. Hasay needs to move up in distance.

Well, the Tunisian is not shabby. She's going to end up with Olympic and World steeplechase golds by the time the case against the Russian doper is over.

Hasay already has moved up in distance, to 10k. Along the way, why not also race at shorter distances -- especially indoors -- and especially if she continues to improve at those distances? She ran an indoor mile PB last week, and now an indoor 3k PB. I suppose she could set up an indoor 10k for herself and run that ...

Jordan Hasay is running awesome. She is improving with every race - 4 second PR today. I can't wait until she runs her distance 10K.

Jordan is not a miler nor a middle distance runner. Yet, kudos to Alberto Salazar for transforming this young gal into the "competitive zone" on the World Circuit in the shorter distances. I see nothing but great things to come from Ms. Hasay.

Well, she did indeed "smoke" all the Brits (being English decent of her own). Can't wait to watch Jordan run the 10K in Eugene. I will be there!

My point is it doesn't matter the talent of the winner in this race - Jordan ran a 34 second flat final 200 meters which is no speed at all and exposes her weakness on a world stage. She can run PBs all she wants but will continue to get "smoked" (not even my choice of words). She is a delightful young lady and an excellent athlete but I fail to see how entering these middle distance events and getting her doors blown off (even while setting a PB) in the final few laps is beneficial to her.

You fail to see how running faster and faster each year is beneficial? Ok.

She will continue to improve. She will continue to do well enough to make national teams, maybe. She will continue to get burnt in any kind of sprint finish. IF I remember right, Prefontaine finished 4th. Ryun grabbed a silver when he should have won. Scott, Symmonds etc... bombed when it counted etc.. etc... Winning a medal on a world stage will never be easy. Don't get your hopes up because you are infatuated with someone because of her looks and who cannot compete at that level. Those other runners who beat her will move up as well. If you are a fan, just enjoy the improvement. If USA has anyone better, they will beat her out for that spot on the team and it won't even be a realistic concern at that point. If USA doesn't have 3 people willing to train as hard as she does and have a little speed to go with it, then too bad for USA.

Agree for the most part, but Ryun wasn't going to win in '68 even at his best. Altitude son. Altitude.

As a senior runner in high school, I just wish I had her wheels, durability, and future. That's not asking for much is it? How do I do it?

So, you're claiming that she's the Journey of distance runners?

Think the time to throw her to the marathon has come already? If she has any durability for high mileage and the necessary workouts it would be interesting to see what she does.

Jordan is only 23 years old, yet it seems she's been around forever??? Just watch her progression this next year, particularly at USA outdoors in Eugene.

I believe she is going to make a statement.
