I remember growing up many friends had saunas in their house. You never see that anymore. Was it just an 80s fad? I could use a sauna right now. relaxing, eh?

I come from Finnish heritage and many of my relatives still have saunas in their houses in the South. My grandparents used to live across the street from us and we used to sauna-pool all the time.
Funny. I was telling my wife about the health club in my town during the 80's. It was mostly Nautilus equipment, a sauna, an indoor pool, and two steam rooms.
I never understood why people enjoyed sitting in a steam room. (unless it was a hook up for DL dudes)
Where did you grow up that people had saunas in their house? I have never seen that before and I was born before the 80s.
One of my friends had a sauna in his house.

What is the difference between a sauna and a steam room?
Sauna is dry heat with Western Cypress (usually) and lava rocks that can be used to generate steam. However, the point is to generate dry heat and some vapor every now and again.
A steam room is just that: lots of hot ass steam.
I enjoy a sauna but not the steam room.
Also agree about the DL hook up spot. The sauna/steam room at my local YMCA is basically off limits unless you are into that kind of thing.

A sauna is a dry heat (i.e., low humidity) environment. A steam room is... well, the name says it all.
Some people use sauna for jacuzzi.
I'm of Finnish heritage and almost all of my relatives currently have saunas in their houses. Whenever I visit my parents, I'm sure to hit up their sauna.
Most of these houses were built prior to the 1980s, and I suspect the saunas were installed in the 70s or 80s.
I live in Arizona. We have one big outdoor sauna for 10 months out of the year.
Do you like saunas? Call me now!

You Fins love your Saunas. 5.5 million people; 3.5 million saunas.
They are the Ibuprofen of Finland.
Had a weekend get away in October. Pool, hot tub without jets, hot tub with jets, steam room, sauna. 100% relaxed. I'm meditating myself back there now.
Spa day is great for relationships.

Never ever heard of Western Cypress before today? Does it actually exist? Where do you buy it?
With that said, the OP's representation of the numbers of aunas in people homes in the 80s is a bit stretched.
On the other hand, the ubiquitous waterbed is pretty much past history.

Sorry. Western Red Cedar but I sense you already knew that.
Never seen a house with a sauna in it, but where I grew up, many people had hotubs.
I wonder if anyone still uses a waterbed? Truly a product of the 80s.
Parents are Finnish. Sauna in the back yard next to the pool....awesome

My dad had a waterbed with zebra print sheets.
