Alberto Salazar mentioned Cain is using a new piece of exercise equipment that supposedly mimics running perfectly. Do any of you know what it's called or have experience with it?

Who?
It's the treadmill that is split for each foot. Each foot has it's own narrow treadmill and rises slightly independently. There is an infomercial for it. It's supposed to reduce impact.
Why does she need a special treadmill? She never had problems with injuries before did she?

She trains with Salazar. Salazar is notorious for more or less having a mad-scientist approach to running that involves exploring all sorts of training technology regardless of whether a runner may need it or not.
reduce impact? that's supposed to be helpful?
is it similar to the woodway split-belt systems used in rehab or more like the bowflex treadclimber?
the woodway looks sweet, naturally. the bowflex looks like a trainwreck.
The Zero Runner from Octane?

She was injured last winter due to treadmill running at home while still attending high school. At least that was the stated reason for missing the World Indoor Championships. The time off seemed to result in a lack of fitness, at least compared to her stellar indoor season before injury, for her outdoor season.
Now that she is under the watchful eyes of NOP she is unlikely to repeat the same mistake that caused injury last season.

That might be it. Watched a video and the thing looks better than ellipticals, but really misses the mark. Pretty good idea, though.

You do realize that though you gave it a more innocuous link, it still has .jpg at the end right?

Wasn't she part of the NOP last season?

Pretty sure it is the Octane Zero Runner, which seems like a cool device; however, the $4K price tag puts it in a limited demographic. Also, it could be too shook absorbing, which would limit its usefulness for intense training.
Wouldn't aqua-jogging in the pool accomplish the same for less?

Sure.
It was the treadmill.
Sure.

I don't understand why more runners don't use regular old treadmills on an incline of 3 or 4 percent. It's much less impact and will let you get in a lot more miles and it isn't very different from your typical running mechanics.

My thoughts too...I'm sure her school has a pool she can use instead of lugging a $4k elliptical into her dorm room.

She was a professional signed with the NOP group but she was also a high school kid living at home with her parents. She did not have the everyday access to Salazar and the professional staff that she does now that she lives in Portland.

You are right on all counts. Those who can tolerate, or better yet enjoy, running on a treadmill are fortunate. I get bored out of my mind on one. I mean mega-bored. I will go out in any kind of weather at any time of day or night but cannot tolerate the "dreadmill".
