Do it, and take the year to do service for a population that has a much lower standard of living than you and greater barriers to moving up the social ladder. Then you will have more appreciation for the life that has been provided to you, like the opportunity to even attend college, and perhaps orient your studies toward helping to address the issues that plague our communities.
College is essentially a four-year break from the reality of your life before and after the experience. I always recommend that people take the time to learn more about the world around them rather than immerse themselves in the fantasy world of the college campus.
