Outkicked Estrada and Braun.
Outkicked Estrada and Braun.
He'd make a good EPOpian, tuck and sprint.
From NAU? Interviewing him now.
He's doubling now. hit 100 miles/week.
He won a Eurotrash style jacket too
"It's been years since I won a race"
Spent his whole life at altitude. Was AZ XC Runner of the Year in high school. Attending NAU and Oregon. He excelled from 800m-3200m. He was a top Foot Locker finalist, placing 11th his JR year, winning FL West his SR year, and then 5th his SR year.
Obviously a talent. Worked hard. Kept at it. Broke through.
He transferred from Oregon to NAU a couple years ago and from NAU through now, has been progressing ever since. Training with Diego Estrada and the NAU guys has been paying off.
He's got no previous race result that points to him doing this well.
Hanging with Diego for the first 3 miles in a 4 mile tempo on the track at 7,000 feet:

2009 Foot Locker High School Cross Country Championship
-Made FLN as a junior and was a favorite going into the race his senior year
-Got 2nd at 2010 Arcadia in 8:53 to Jake Hurysz
-13:44 PR
-15th at NCAA XC in 2012
Basically he's been good at for a long time but this is still a breakthrough race for him.
KEY FACT: He still has eligibility at NAU and won't be collecting the $20,000 prize for first place.
Why is Futsum so far back on the tempo? Guy is a stud and he's a minute back from Estrada.
From Tilastopaja:
23 yo (dob 22 July 1991)
best marks:
3:43.35 (2013, Tempe)
4:03.14 (2014, OT indoor -- Husky Classic)
7:59.62 (2012, OT indoor -- Husky Classic)
13:44.55 (2014, OT indoor -- Ames)
5km road -- 13:59 (2014 -- Providence)
The race played out nicely for him, he has a great chance in a kick to the finish. Anyone who remembers him from his high school days knows he has great speed for the distances he races. Although nowadays it seems you need to be able to kick like a miler just to win a 10k.
I don't think this performance came out of nowhere, like other have suggested. He seems to have had some injury problems but when healthy he can put together some truly impressive results (most recently 4th at the CVS road 5k).
Per your request, some of the last few times I actually saw him race in person he was winning open 400s at mid size Arizona meets. Maybe that was in '09?
Brian is so cute!
This guy is not an unknown here in Flagstaff. He is probably the best known runner to come out of our high schools here (Flagstaff High School). He dominated distance running at the high school level and obtained a scholarship to Oregon. Those who remember him here have always expected that he would break out just like this. He has a reputation as a real clean kid.
Is he related to Charlie Shrader who was an All-American at University of Maryland in the early '70s?
His family history goes back to that area, but no relationship to Charlie has been found. Brian does have a 1st cousin that is currently a redshirt freshman punter on the Maryland football team, coincidently enough.
