You still have to generate electricity for these cars, and the extra electricity necessary will still mostly come from fossil fuels.
What somebody should invent is a car that runs on photosynthesis. Then cars will use solar power to convert carbon dioxide into plant material that pushes on turbines as it grows. Every hundred miles or so you will stop, remove the resulting tree saplings from the fuel tank, and plant them by the side of the road, where they will continue to remove atmospheric carbon and provide beautiful scenery at the same time.

I'm sure Al Gore is criss-crossing the country in his corporate jet looking for something just like this idea (or a man-bear-pig). Hard to say.
