Especially on sandy uphills, don't try to push using all your energy on the sand. You lose a lot of energy on it, without gaining much time. Better to run hard but relaxed and within yourself on the sand, then when the ground hardens out, you hammer it to make up the bit of lost time. Most people will kill their legs on the sand and have nothing left for the faster ground.
run on the hard packed stuff closer to the water. the area where the tide has recently gone down. in some instances this stuff is almost as hard as a crusher dust path.
this was my experience running on the beach in Bali, and in the Philipinnes.
Shuffle on soft sand.
