Wesley Frazier beats Erin Finn by a hundredth of a second. She not only wins the national title but breaks the national record.

Wottle was new on the scene. He had no track record (literally) internationally so him tying the world record was discounted by the experts. The 800 was his second event. Even Sports Illustrated (a US publication) had this prediction:
1. ARZHANOV, USSR
2. FROMM, E. GER.
3. OUKO, KENYA
"800 meter world record holder Wottle of the U.S. is bothered by tendinitis and Arzhanov can win with any kind of tempo."
Well Les, the problem with the self-appointed experts is that they proved themselves not to be experts, didn't they? The cool thing about track is that the experts don't have any influence on the outcome, like, let's say, ice skating or gymnastics.
Wottle had the world record in the 800m.
He man-handled the field through all three rounds -- exactly like you'd expect from the world-record holder.

Sure. Viren was the favorite, but, to fall that far into the race, get up, take the lead and win the Olympics in a new WR??? Viren was a tough MF
Meb at Boston. Underdog, took off early, looked like he was gonna get reeled in, fought it off for the emotional win.
