Caffeine before a race is a must especially if you normally consume caffeine everyday.
I did it before a 10k last year. I ran very well. It pumps you up and gets you out there for the first mile or even two miles with a little less effort due to the raised heart rate.
I did not feel any jitters when I was finished with the race.
