just aired on Universal Sports. So surprised Emma was many strides back with 300 to go and simply out kicked Hiwot. I didn't think she had that gear. Learned a lot his year. Young hungry and beautiful.

All this Marrakesh stuff has been a hot-weather survival contest. Mercy Cherono couldn't even break 16 at the African champs.
Unless I misunderstood you, Mercy wasn't there.
Coburn was going to beat Ayalew in my opinion even if she hadn't banged her knee on the barrier. I also believe Ayalew panicked hence the minor incident.
Weird finish. Coburn made up several meters going over the last water jump and then Ayalew just about fell down going over the last barrier. Not sure Coburn was running faster, she was just FAR better over the barriers. Surprising off such a slow pace, but I have heard that any top Africans rarely practice barriers. They typically look a little ragged over the barriers, but maybe it works a lot better at a faster pace.
Nice win for sure and decent pay day...at least for our sport. Total prize money for the meet was a millon less than Serena Williams got for winning the US Open. US Open first round winners got $35,000. A golfer most people have never heard of just won $11,000,000 yesterday. Professional track & field has a long way to go.
Universal Sports has an almost full version. They ran around 3:40 for the first K!!! Typical Diamond League would be 3:01 to 3:06. I think Coburn was trying to get someone else to finally lead a race. The slower she would go, the slower the field went. Finally I think she just got tired of the lack of help, and took off. She lead for most all of the race and dropped all but the Africans after 2K. Then the racing began. Coburn had a big last lap, passing Jebet then gaining about 10 meters on Hiwot. Coburn had the momentum going into the last barrier. They were absolutely even at this point with Coburn surging. She would have passed Hiwot regardless.

It's on YouTube, plus an interview. Her coach wasn't in Morocco so she took her boyfriend's advice not to push the pace as hard as usual. Said she had more "in the tank" at the end. Really a smart race - when she challenged at the end her African competitors fell apart. Diamond League champ Ayalew panicked as they went over the last barrier together, tripped, injured herself and staggered to the finish line in second.

That woman is a beast
Perhaps Ms. Coburn should listen to boyfriend Joe more often. With decent 1500 credentials, does she have to attack from the gun every race???????????
Dear Emma, you should always start a little slower, it's the Colorado way.
In other news, should you really get a 30k paycheck for running 9:50 steeple ? When was the last time a major event was won in a time like that ?
Well if you read my post above you would understand the time. Coburn has demonstrated the ability to compete in a variety of race strategies. She dictates the race almost every time. Takes courage and ability to race like she does.
The thing about Emma is she is only 23, 1st year as a pro. She ran NCCA in 2013, after a red shirt in 2012 to get ready for the Oly games. She did win the steeple that year but did not run the rest of the year do to injury.
Emma has not lost to an American since June 2010. I doubt any other American athlete can claim that honor.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
