Galen Rupp's 2014 campaign was aimless.
He had one vague goal, to break a lot of AR's. He did a couple meaningless indoor ones and his own outdoor one. Then he wandered Europe occasionally dabbling in this and that.
Nobody likes the 10,000 anymore and nobody takes indoors seriously because the technology enhances performances. So there's nothing for Rupp to do. He is like a rudderless duck drifting from pond to pond on the dark, meandering tides of fate.
As usual, a good post from BW.
In fairness to Rupp, a year without a global championship (I still haven't decided if indoor counts for distance runners...leaning towards no) is likely to be somewhat aimless.
His year was actually pretty typical of his consistency, putting down very good, but not world beating (though he did have the world leading performance in the usless 10,000).
Perhaps his family situation this year precluded him from chasing DL points. I think it would have been interesting to see him target a marathon in this off-year. Does his camp really think he can snag another medal or contend for gold in '15 or '16? I guess with all of the talent gravitating to the roads these days it is wise to stay with the 10,000.
Really good. Once his babies came It was a given to me that he wasn't going to be quite in shape for the 5k american record. But no doubt he was the best American out there. Great season.
Solid, not exciting. All in all, ran some good times and competed well in the 5000, but nothing that made me glad that I'm a track fan.
...rewarding.
Set an American Record at 10000 meters, and became a father. That is win win.
Pretty amazing for a non-WC/Olympic year. Many athletes just phone it when there are no WCs/Olympics (Yes, talking about you Mr. Bolt). Rupp's 10k AR was huge. 15 seconds faster than any other American. 24th fastest 10k time ever. 15th fastest 10k runner ever. His 5k races were solid, but none of them really were set up right to go fast. But he did PR in the 1500, showing that he is working on his kick and is improving. The 5k for Rupp will always just be a compliment to his 10k. Rupp just doesn't have the extra gear needed to win at 5k. But trying to find that extra gear is very beneficial to his 10k racing.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
