Everyone who runs regularly does so for their own reasons; whether it's to feel healthy, get in better shape, be social, compete, or simply an activity that helps clear their mind etc. Whatever category(s) you might fall under, the bottom line is that the ability to run enhances your life in a positive manner.
I'm going to try and not write a small novel here...
I volunteered at a Muscular Dystrophy Association camp in the rocky mountains for a summer and the majority of kids there had duchenne muscular dystrophy which means they were usually using a wheelchair by the time they reached their early teens. This obviously made their movement, and social lives very limited. While the general public is familiar with the physical limitations of a neuromuscular disability, I believe few are aware of the social implications this has on a youth affected by the disease.
While each of these kids are at camp, they get to experience what I compare to the freedom and enrichment that running adds to my life. Whether it's swimming, zip-lining, hiking around the Empire area, or bunking with fellow campers for the week, the social and physical improvement is one of the most valuable experiences of their entire life. I cannot begin to express what tremendous value each camper gains from this week alone.
Unfortunately for many youth diagnosed with MD, camp is not an affordable option for their families as one trip to camp costs $800.
I'm sure there are some of you who's lives have either improved or transformed due to running's benefits. For anyone that has run their first race, half, or full marathon; that feeling of gratification, physical health improvement, and happiness is equivalent to what MDA campers are able to experience.
Thank you for taking the time to read this entire post even though it might be a bit too lengthy...
Lastly, as I train for this year's Chicago Marathon I am raising funds for MDA that will help send financially strained youth to MDA camp, if you'd like to contribute so much as $1 you would be helping send a kid to camp and experience a similar joy that running brings to all of us as we run regularly.
