There are some great podcasts out there featuring comedians that talk about their life and why they got into comedy or what drives them. These are not comedians doing their act but speaking from the heart.
When I first started listening to comedians off the stage I was surprised at just how sad or lonely or depressed a lot of the folks are. Very few of your good comedians are the 'class clown', happy-go-lucky types. A lot of that comedy comes from very dark places within the mind.
Marc Maron had Robin on his WTF podcast a few years ago. Worth a listen if you have the time.
