You need some context. It was over 70f and humid, and that was a night race, so track and stands would have absorbed and radiated a lot of heat. Sweat was pouring off the leaders early on, i.e. not ideal conditions for hammering, and most champ races are tactical so they won't hammer the pace anyways. So running 27 hi is pretty good given all that.

Finishing in 55,say, at a 40min 10k easy run pace bites, but finishing in 55 when most of the speed is last 250, in that heat, is pretty good. Also, the last 800m was about 2min flat, Rupps AR last 800 was 1:58, not much faster, so running 60+, followed by 55, hammering last 220 is harder then just saying "oh, he only finished in 55, that's as lame as his NCAA days".

Cam ran pretty smart as others mentioned, staying at back of pack till near then end. Also he pulled a very alert tactical move with about 220 to go, bursting ahead of backmarker, forcing East Africans to go wide. did anyone see Ahmed stumble with about 300 to go, i think he, and everyone else, was drained from the heat. Also, smaller men, like Kipsiro, have an easier time with heat then bigger men (less volume/mass -> faster cooling), i've seen Cam up close and he's actually pretty muscular/strong compared to most. Maybe his Jewfro acts like cooling fins on a CPU, i'm sure Salazar has worked out that efficiency.

All in all, the finishing order was what it should have been. I think Cam would not be overly happy to move up a medal simply by blocking someone. Kipsiro is known to have a monster kick, and the quicker man won.

Kipsiro was a 12.50/7.30 runner with a monster kick a few years back and in those days Farah used to idolise Kipsiro but the Kipsiro of the last 3/4 years has been finishing near the back of the pack in championship finals as the injuries have caught up with him. That said it still a good performance by Levins even if the gold/silver medallists arent in the world's top 8-10 runners over the distance.

Looks like levins has the Will Leer disease. Run well when no one good shows up. Fact is the 2 top 10 k racers in the wotld weren't in yhe race. Kenya sent it's B squad. You can rave about their times but they are on no one 's radar.

Man, if this performance from a Canadian is not good enough for people in the running world then there is something seriously lacking here. Why can't we see the good in this instead of bringing in such negativity. Definitely not a disappointment and something to be proud of. The Commonwealth games runners are still people to beat. Of course, Not the million-dollar-world-record/Olympic games,-let's-take-all-the-talent-back-from-the-marathon-and-put-them-onto-the-track,-no-country-cap,-all-time-greats-crowd, for certain. But still something to be proud of. However, I am going to rewatch the 10k and if it's true that he looked over his shoulders too much at the end, then that's silly. Once or twice to assess the situation, frame the plan and then it's time to go all out glory. And then the silver medalist celebrating early, seriously, haha, he's probably getting chewed up by Athletics Kenya and minor Kenyan news media as we speak.

Watched a video from the turn to the home stretch. I guess he might have glanced around a lot before then, but from that point, he only glanced at the point of the curve. That's called for. Guy was tired. And this is the Commonwealth Games, not the Olympic Final, so if Levins has a Bernard Lagat crazy kick in his lifetime, he should save it for later. What I don't understand is the Kenyan. He might not have seen Kipsiro, since Kipsiro was trailing before the bend upon the home straight. But as he's coming to the finish line, if he's noticing that he's gonna beat Levins, how does he not notice Kipsiro pulling clearly ahead of them both? The photo used by Letsrun's recap arguably suggests Bett celebrating. From the video, it doesn't look to be that way and I can't imagine what he's doing celebrating in a close finish. Hmmmm

Impossible to know if it was fatigue or if he was trying to head off Bett without asking him!

He came very close to beating 2 athletes who have significantly better PRs.
