Throw out all of your dishes and silverware. They are probably mismatched junk.
Go buy matching everything. Get real silverware, not some stamped steel crap from walmart. You will probably want 8 settings if you ever plan on entertaining people. I went with 12 settings, but I'm married with kids.

It wasn't until I was long married that I came to appreciate decent quality eating utensils. I wished I would have known when I was younger.
All you need is a futon.
Sofa, comfy chairs, dining table and chairs, bookcase, beanbags (well, I like them), desk.
Silverware and linens - just go with what you like. There's not really one best brand. I only have the basics to be honest. I guess linens means bedding, couldn't really work it out. Egyptian cotton is nice. Don't get cheap polyester or polycotton mix. It doesn't breathe and isn't a very nice fabric.
I agree with the silverware comment, just get a cheap but matching set.
Find a sofa and chairs cheap, maybe used but not from any place that is sketchy. Make them at least reasonably match, and comfortable. An entertainment center with cheap tv and console. Dining table and 4 chairs. Microwave, toaster, coffee maker, (I like the keurig if you drink coffee a lot, with the attachment allowing you to put the coffee grounds into a filter in it, but it's a little expensive).
If you have bedsheets that aren't little kid ones from when you lived at home, use those unless they just look stupid.
A roommate would also be a great accessory, even helps cook, pay the bills, and pass time.
nonstick cookware (pots and pans). Some classy pictures to hang on the walls. Have some books laying around. A comfy couch and flat screen tv so you and your so can watch diamond league and the world marathon majors. Keurig makers if you drink coffee. You can make oatmeal in them too.
How does oatmeal in the Keurig work?
Lady at Macy's was advising to stay away from the Teflon coated pits and pans due to the chemicals transferring to your food. She was all about some stainless steel. Thoughts?
Is lazy boy furniture worth it? American furniture warehouse has a ton more selection and better prices, but I assume the quality is a bit less.
Thanks for the help guys. Heading towards Home Depot now in search of a reasonably priced stripped pole and strobe light combo pack
AFW is great. Quality is good, and prices are great. AFW knows its customers. My wife has spent a lot of money there over the past 20 years or so. They do a good job of matching product (quality/price) to their customers. Bedroom set is 10 years old, from AFW ... still going strong. China cabinet 5 years old, still looks good and holds china that we will never use, dining room table 5 years old ... looks great. Sofa from AFW 3 years old ... looks good, but doesn't match the area rug. Never had a problem with anything from AFW, except that some of it wouldn't fit down the stairwell going to the family room in the basement, and AFW exchanged for a sectional.
A life-sized doll of your mother to snuggle up with when you get lonely.
A bong. A bottle opener.

You just don't put in the k cup, and put the oatmeal mix in the bowl under the coffee maker. All it does is boil the water and pour it into the bowl, and you mix it up. Oatmeal.

It really depends on you priorities.
I feel completely different from this poster. Spend money on what you enjoy and will keep for a LONG time. If you think you are going to get married and start a home with another in the next ten year then cheap out and save the $. If you like cooking then go ahead and get quality cookware. But if you are gonna be picking out place settings in a few years with a spouse then go ahead and buy used stuff at a Goodwill store for now. That goes for furniture and other stuff too. If a sweet bed set and dresser genuinely make you happy, go for it.
Don't listen to these fools. You don't need any of this garbage. It's all a waste of money. Aside from the kitchen essentials, all I have in my apartment is a mattress (not even a full bed set), a tv, a couch, a coffee table, and a couple of lights. Just keep these things clean and you're golden. This will give you extra money to spend on the things that really matter...drinks at the bar. I slay a different chick every week. When they laugh and ask why I don't have any furniture, I simply tell them "It's a minimalist style. It's the latest trend in Europe." Drunk sluts will believe anything you tell them. And if you really wanna spice up the place just buy a dog. Bitches love dogs.

1000 count sheets for your own comfort and to impress your overnight guest
DO NOT spend big money for a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
Eureka makes vacuums that are just as good for WAY cheaper. You can get a bagless Eureka for under $100, and they are GREAT. We have two different ones; one for the first floor and one for the second floor. Both are awesome, and bagless is the way to go.
We had a Hoover before and it sucked...actually it DIDN'T suck. One pass with the Eureka and everything is picked up, including all dog hair. Amazing product.
