Bachelors in accounting in 2000 from mediocre school with decent accounting program followed by 2.5 years at construction management company doing a little bit of everything (not straight accounting) making like like $39.5K to $44K.
In 9/2002 company wanted to send me to northwest Florida (no thanks) so I hung out in DR for a few months and started looking for job 1/2003 in poor job market.
In 2/2003 started at mid size MEP engineering company doing basic accounting tasks that I had no experience with like bank recs, payroll, journal entries, etc. for $49K. Over the next few years took on more and more responsibility - company paid for my masters in accounting 2006 - 2009.
In 2010 I asked for CFO role and was given it. I was lucky that no one was ahead of me all those years as the previous CFO was fired in 2002 for stealing from company so company was looking for young/smart person to mold.
Last year I helped company to change structure to allow me to buy in as partner (previously company was PC that could only be owned by PE's).
