Pink Floyd?
I have a feeling your definition of "the biggest-selling group of the 70s" is different than what most of us might think you mean.

no...the carpenters...karen
That's one album, not all the albums a group might put out over a decade.
Still think some of the numbers of the OP are off.

They were the biggest-selling group of the 70s. No fewer than ten of their singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005 combined worldwide sales of albums and singles well exceeded 100 million units. Yet the Carpenters were much more than creators of beautifully crafted and hugely successful hit records. Within the space of just a few years their unique and inimitable sound had brought a new dimension to the world of popular music.
That comes from their own website. Other references call them the best selling American group. I've seen that and had no doubt what group you had in mind.
For those looking at the album sales, best selling includes singles not just albums.
Karen was the voice but in many ways Richard was the Carpenters, for good and bad.
regardingless....karen wss breaking the rules during a time of "banging your head against the wall music"
who would of thought
listen to one of greatest of voices of all time
This thread is dumb. Google biggest selling group of the 70s. No matter how its sorted The Carpenters do not show up on any list. The Eagles, as I recall, generally regarded as the top selling band of the 70s, consistently show up at the top or near the top of every list.
Carpenters had 19 Top Ten singles from 1970 to 1981 and released 17 albums during the 1970s that each sold over a million copies. The duo generated sales of 80 million records worldwide with their soft-rock sound, which was "the squeaky-clean antidote to the early-70s brew of antiwar protests and acid rock," according to Tim Purtell in Entertainment Weekly.
With their light, airy melodies and meticulously crafted, clean arrangements, the Carpenters stood in direct contrast with the excessive, gaudy pop/rock of the '70s; yet they became one of the most popular artists of the decade, scoring 12 Top Ten hits, including three number one singles.
The Singles 1969-73, became one of the best-selling albums of all time and was on the LP charts for an amazing 115 weeks

Guessing Fleetwood Mac because I know that before Thriller came along, Rumours was by far the best-selling album of all time.

I googled "carpenters best selling" and came up with five different websites, including npr.org, that describe Carpenters as the best selling American act of the 70s.
When has NPR ever been wrong?
Don't answer that. Maybe tomorrow I'll try to figure out exactly what best selling means in this context.
This list specifically notes "sales figures" but fails to give a source.

The Carpenters aren't in the top 10 here. Neither, improbably, is Fleetwood Mac.
I also wonder if people who make these lists include sales IN the 1970s of albums released PRIOR TO the 1970s, sales of albums RELEASED IN the 1970s AFTER the 1970s were actually over, or both. Differences in these criteria could account for different rankings, as could the tendency of people on the Internet (excluding this place, of course) to emit "facts" from their asses.
Before opening I was going to say ABBA, but doesn't seem to fit the clues.
I believe Frampton Comes Alive was the best selling album prior to thriller

Thanks, I did the same thing and they didn't show up on any of the lists. Dumb thread.

That's nothing. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon sold 50 MILLION copies and was on the charts for 741 weeks -- from release in 1973 until freaking 1988. 115 weeks? Just getting started..
After Karen died from anorexia, Richard Carpenter's come-back song was, "She Ain't Heavy, She's My Sister".
