During the 3k. I was standing over by the fence at 200m, and heard the Oregon women's coach yelling at Mary Cain during the 3k.
3 laps in, I overhear the UO coach say "Mary was supposed to wait 2 laps to take the lead. I need to call alberto"
Then she makes a call, then waits for Mary to come around and yells "Mary, Mary, Alberto says to move out to lane 2 and let the girl pass. You need to follow for the next 2 laps. Move out to lane 2"
Then Mary moves out to lane 2...and jenks doesn't go by. so Mary just continues to lead.
The whole situation was bizarre, and strange since Cain took the lead from the gun and was the class of the field

Ans we're supposed to believe someone would yell that long sentence at a runner moving at such speed?

The fact you all think this is a troll is amazing.
Go watch the race video on usatf.tv
You'll see mary move out on the backstretch. -
It is true that at one point Cain made this unusual odd move out to lane 2 as if to let Jenks pass. But it was clear that Jenks was just hanging on and was never going to pass. (Nothing against Jenks - she was way ahead of third place)

Hahahahah, runners are not that fast.

Alberto is insane.

Plz pass along Al's digits. I raced yesterday after a layoff and could have used in-race pacing advice.
-
The two of you who laughed at my post have probably never raced on the track and tried to hear splits yelled at you.
Even hearing "61" is hard let alone such a sentence. -

Wrong... you lack focus.
It isn't necessary to hear an entire sentence, just the basics.
You also fail to grasp that AlSal would never just said one or two words. He is not a man of few words.
I do wonder, why hasn't AlSal tried using an earpiece to tell an athlete what to do as they race? He does seem to use sub-coaches placed strategically around the track to provide during the coaching, which does not surprise me one bit. AlSal is always cheering from the sidelines. -
Alberto actually cheers from the track rather than the sidelines whenever he is allowed.

haha great!
"Mary, Mary, Alberto says to move out to lane 2 and let the girl pass. You need to follow for the next 2 laps. Move out to lane 2" then becomes "Mary, move, girl, next."
I hope you were joking... -
Salazar is paranoid about people taking the lead.
Thank goodness he didn't coach Vladmir Kuts,
Herb Elliot
David Moorcroft
Henry Rono
Kenenisa Bekele
Joan Benoit
Ingrid Kristianson
Wang Junxia
Emma Coburn
Jenny Simpson
Mary Decker

why does this seem credible? Al is the control freak and is morbidly afraid of any of his athletes leading until the last lap.
-
I don't care what happened in the race. There's no way some Oregon coach was calling Salazar, then acting a middle (wo)man in directing Cain.
-
Here's the race strategy. Takes 5 minutes to explain.

Genius. It was the Oregon women's coach. Maurica Powell. Andy's wife.

Go to 5:20 into the video. 4 laps in.
You'll see Powell in stands in pink.
Then mary glance over at Powell. Then Mary does this weird move out to let he is pass.
