My theory is high mileage running beyond a certain point isn't beneficial. Especially for distances half marathon on down.
People think the high mileage is helping them, but the truth is that high mileage training or whatever has just allowed them to get to a lower running weight and maintain it. Most of the extra miles are junk anyways.
The reason this is never brought up is because people and coaches are scared to introduce eating disorders in runners. So they just say, "run more miles" as a CYA measure.
The truth is, there are many runners running near world class times on 30-50 miles per week. Their "secret" is they stay at a very low weight.
(Disclaimer: Of course eating disorders are bad and will harm running performance. So don't use this as a straw man argument.)
