Absolutely! If some runners do well on relatively low mileage, then of course even lower mileage would be ideal!
In fact, just thinking about running may be the optimal training load!

Amazing you are the first person to understand what I'm trying to explain. We should all be so lucky to coach kids that can start the season doing 8 mile long runs.
I plan on using plyometrics on the "off" days to work on speed muscle recruitment, tempo/hill work/distance on the "hard" days.
I will try to keep this thread going, you all do the same.
Aloha!
I thought that was what you were trying to say but until you answered that only 6 of 35 will bother to attend summer practice, I couldn't believe it was enough of a problem to worry about.
Back in HS, 30+ years ago, sometimes we would have "captains" practice. My freshman year, our captain was 1 min better than anyone on our team and quite a good leader. If some of the older guys that he was counting on to fill out the top 7 didn't show up the first part of our run would be to the slacker's house to get him.
If you had to guess, which places on your team will the 6 run?
When do you have practice? Have you tried different times of day? Can you email the team and see if there would be a better time?
The high school I attended would have maybe 8 girls run, and all but me were slower than 25 minutes for a 5k (some where 30+ minutes)...So my coach had a similar problem to you and I do remember the circuits as part of pre-season. We would do 400m, then stop and do push ups and all those different exercises for some set amount of time, then another 400...ect for 20 minutes. I'm sure it helps those newer runners expand their aerobic capacity without as much wear and tear.
