It didn't work for Robby Andrews.
It was a struggle for Alan Webb which is still being debated.

Well, he did - and that was a great time, I'm taking nothing away from it or him.
But it was also a less than 4 second PR in 3 years.
You completely miss the context of both records.
Rupp was hanging on for dear life in 2011 when he ran 26:48 and finished 3rd.
Rupp blasted the last 800 here, won the race, and finished barely looking out of breath.
He could have run 26:35.

I don't miss the context and maybe he could have run faster but he didn't.
Maybe he should have taken the lead earlier - he didn't.
Great run by Rupp but the fact is that his PR has only been improved by less than 4 seconds in three years.

The fact that you are brining that up shows you completely missed the context of both races.

Oh and, you are an idiot for talking like that to a stranger.
Thinking about this more, given Oregon's team prospects in XC I would be shocked if he didn't stay in the NCAA for the fall. After that I suppose he can stay on the team and run conference/NCAA's, but also get in professional meets to face fields with better competition.
However, in the past many athletes have lost out on lucrative contracts by not signing at the top of their game. He lost, sure - but he's shown he can be competitive with a Diamond League standard athlete in Lawi. I would advise him to go pro if he gets a good enough offer. Stay at Oregon as a volunteer assistant (allowing him to train with the team and use their facilities) and continue to work on his degree.
As an aside, this makes me curious as to what type of contracts Lawi has been offered in the past? They can't have been great for him to stay in the NCAA so long. The guy ran 13:00 and was mixing it up in the Diamond League, yet he came back to the NCAA?? Is there that little interest in him, or is he just that loyal to Arizona for bringing him to the US?
He is quite amazing. However, he doesn't own any NCAA record yet. He doesn't even own any Oregon U. Records....
I think that staying another year is fine. He will have plenty of competition at the mile distance, but he will obviously own the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000.
It will be nice to see him go sub 7:40, 13:10 and 28:00 next year...
He should grab 2 or 3 NCAA records in the process...
My prediction is he stays at least through cross next year, as he seems like a team player and the Ducks have a shot to win the NCAA title (if Jenkins remains healthy).
However, it wouldn't surprise me if he goes pro. He can certainly run faster next year, but he'll also be the hands down favorite to win everything he races. With Lalang and Kithuka graduating he'll have zero competition in the fall and on the track. Basically the only competition will be that against himself. He could do what D'Agostino seems to do, which is pick and choose a few pro-focused races during the track season, getting more experience. The real question is how much would he actually get offered. Considering he's not an American, he'll get paid more like a Kenyan (lower than a U.S. runner).

Going pro in track certainly does not prevent anyone from getting an education.
You're definitely right. Sometimes I forget about the Jager/Cain way.

Don't get me wrong, he's VERY good, but I'm not convinced he can hack it with the pros in the near future. He will get there if he continues at this rate.
Why do you think he'd be faster with Salazar? Salazar can't even get his current group running faster. He excels at tactics not fitness.
This!!! I thought I was the only one who realized that NOP don't run crazy fast times but still manage to place well when it counts. Exhibit A: CENTRO

In the mid-80s, Toshibanzai Seko went pro after only 1 semester at USC.
I'ld say give it at least another year before he could step it up to the pro ranks. Something to keep in mind though was that 8 of the top 10 in the 10000 were SR's and the top returning runner is Joe Rosa. Now granted for the 5000, Jenkins still has another year of eligibility left but other than EJ, Cheserek doesn't have much of a threat to challenge him next season. Then again, you never know which also ran will improve and surprise Cheserek and Jenkins come outdoors next season (Levins in 2012 was an example of this).
It will be interesting to see how Cheserek and Jenkins run next season.
