The only things he hasn't accomplished in college are (relatively speaking) fast times and, of course, a 5k title.
Still, I hope you guys (especially you radicals) don't mind this; but it's not necessary for him to stay at Oregon because he doesn't seem like a genius and I doubt he'll get too much smarter (an extended education isn't necessary). Maybe some more English. I HOPE THIS WASN'T HURTFUL.
IMO, he should get used to the pro-racing atmosphere.
WHY NOT?
Time for Cheserek to go pro?

fast times? the dude just ran 13:18...

A 13:18 5k with a 56 last lap won't get him anywhere as a pro. And how the heck would you know about his intelligence? I think someone on here said he was serious about academics.

Really? Because that 56 tells me he could have ran 13:12 or so. And at his age you better believe he should be thinking about moving north to Salazar and crew. It's not abut what he can run today it's about what he can run in two years. And there's little doubt in my mind he'd be faster with Salazar.
That said the kid should get an education. He's going to be phenomenal regardless of whether it's in two years or four. -

Valid point, I agree that he would be faster with Salazar. We just don't know how fast. I think he should do at least another year at UO to see how I (he) develops. Don't get me wrong, he's VERY good, but I'm not convinced he can hack it with the pros in the near future. He will get there if he continues at this rate. -

And we know for sure that saladbar will get him no problem. -
He is a kenyan also-ran.
Zero chance of making their national teams currently.
He should stay in college and develop. -
Why go north? It ain't like he needs to ever go to class to pass eugene clown college. He already gets the best NOPe dope, oregon juice and centro sauce.
-
Plus, with Lawi graduating he basically has no competition within the NCAA. I guess he could stick around and collect titles, but for the sake of his development I hope he goes pro.
He's going toe to toe with a 13:00/3:33 guy, time to move out of the minor league. -

Why do you think he'd be faster with Salazar? Salazar can't even get his current group running faster. He excels at tactics not fitness. -
More importantly, given how much Cheserek improved this year... why change anything?

I was actually gonna start a thread asking if everyone thought he would pull a Centro and bail out of the minor league that is NCAA.
Then I saw someone had started the topic already. If there is a consensus it would seem to be that he SHOULD (and I agree but I would same the same for essentially anyone above about Hasay's level). My question is whether or not he WILL. I predict he does one more year and collects a few more titles but more importantly brings the PRs down a bit. Don't know why I think that - just a guess.
BTW I would not say it's a given he ends up in NOP or even in Nike at all. Why does everyone assume as much? -
the kid ran 13:18 a year removed from HS. Just realize how good he is for his age. Let him develop in this program that he's improved so much in while getting his education. Then he can go to Salazar. As much as he improved this year, sky's the limit next year.

Newsflash. Rupp just set an American record. -
Anyone know if he's trying to get US citizenship? If yes, and he can get it soon, he should go pro. He'd be a good shot for the 10k team (who else do we have beside s Rupp and Derrick that seem like a lock? maybe True) and in the mix for the 5k teams with his kick. I'd say he'd have a great shot at being on our olympic team.
If he wants to stick with school, he could easily take a few classes a semester and still come out ahead financially with his extra few years of pro salary. -
Ches has not gotten onto the circuit against big names yet (except for lawi). Remember how lawi came into that race in Ostrava with a 13:2_ and ran 13:07.13, and then 13:00.95 the next race in rome. Just Bcuz Che's has never been in a fast nontitle race in Europe up against big names with a breakoff lead pack to try to latch onto does not mean he can't run 13:04 if he was in just that type of race.

The problem is, if there is some sort of magic to be had with the trappings of Salazar's programme and Nike, it is not enjoyed by all. Galen Rupp has bore the fruits of it to an extreme degree because he has enjoyed focused attention. I don't think Cheserek turning pro today or even two years from now will receive such focus. It seems to me with so many runners swelling those training groups, rather than benefiting from some alleged synergy, many seem to be falling by the way-side. Sure, Jager, Derrick and Bumbalough are doing nice in Jerry's group, but what about all the other runners? Cheserek is a great talent down the line, and he deserves to be established in his own self and receive proper attention, and not perhaps fade into obscurity and lack of progress in some professional stable. -

Still, he's technically a junior in college. -

Going pro in track certainly does not prevent anyone from getting an education. -

Well, he did - and that was a great time, I'm taking nothing away from it or him.
But it was also a less than 4 second PR in 3 years.
