I am in a slump. Been up in triple digit mileage consistently for 12 months now, and 5k has dropped from 16:01 (June 2013), to 15:50 (April 2014), 15:35 (May 2014).
I was a 4:26 miler, and 9:27 3200m runner in high school after three years of running, and ran around 70mpw my senior year, about 50mpw my junior year, and 40-45mpw my sophomore year.
It is a mental slump more than anything. But it is centered around patience. I know I just need to be patient and keep staying consistent. How long does it usually take for this high mileage to start paying off? I love running this much volume, and deep down, I truly believe it is the way to go. But as selfish as it sounds, I was expecting a larger drop of time for 5k then 26 seconds in 12 months. What does everyone think? Especially experienced high mileage guys.
