He didn't do anything special or "master like". He has the best kick in the field. That doesn't require any crazy tactical ability when you can create a 1-3 second gap on the last lap. If anything, that ability would allow him to be the worst tactician and still win.
I see what you are saying, but he still runs tactically very smart. He takes over the lead, but doesn't actually take off, and in fact slows the pace a bit. When others try to pass, he holds them off and they think he is going, but again, he is not. He waits until HE is 100% ready and makes his big move...*from the front*....he isn't boxed and needs to pass no one when the fast running occurs. Yes, a perfect race for him.
Compare this to Gebremeskel. ONe of the dumbest races I've seen. He knows Mo has a huge kick, he knows Mo is tired from the 10k at least a tad, and he knows that he has the best time in the field, and yet he and his pals..
a) wait until a mile out to start picking it up. It's such a weak effort that they drop NO ONE from the pack (levins and Lomong are right there at the bell)
b) let Mo take over and dictate the race from the front for the last 2 laps.
c) worst of all, Gebremeskel lets himself get COMPLETELY BOXED at the bell, and is unbelievably in NINTH place with 350 to go, and spots Mo 10 meters!
Despite alllllll that, he still almost gets Mo. If he ran even just a little bit smarter, he could have won.
Yes, tactics DID decide the race.
