I had a friend in HS run 232 800m as a freshmen, by senior year he ran 158/416/909/1509 for 800/1600/3200/5000. In college he now has run 153/346 800/1500.
I've always been stubborn and always tried to do too much too early. The few times I listened to my friend I had huge breakthroughs.
He says in base run once a day 6 days a week for about 60 mpw, with a cut back week every 4th week, and strides twice a week. After base when you start doing workouts, that is when he would start doubling. For example he'd go from 60 mpw in base to about 60-70 mpw on 11 runs during the season.
