European style cross has hay bales to jump over, streams to run through, etc. Don't know about "fake hills" - one would assume a cross course has hills of some sort, regardless of origin. They had a World Cross Champs in, I believe, the Meadowlands one year - basically built it up like a motocross course, took it away after.
Winter Nationals in Houston will be a this place called Buffalo Bayou. I guess it is one hard course. Back in the 70's they had the U.S. Nationals on this course and it was tough. A swamp. Nick Rose won. It is also the place where they had the Women's Cross Trials back in the middle 90's before they combined the men and women. The person to contact to find out what the course is really like is Jim MacLatchie, one of the founders of the Houston Harriers. He designed the course, and had his group do weekly workouts on it. So, expect mud, grass and hills.
What I really meant to say...since the course is right next to the Buffalo Bayou, which has been known to flood magnificently, conditions can be muddy for sure and there's plenty of sand due to previous floods. Hills maybe 50' high at most.
Jim designed the original course, but he currently lives in Oregon (I think). How involved with this event he'll be, I don't know. Jon Warren, head coach at Rice U., is the coach for Houston Harriers. He and Sean Wade also coach a group called "Kenyan Way".
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
