That's not retarded at all. What's retarded is thinking that the ability to come back the next day has only to do with endurance. Even Usain Bolt can outrace is competitors over days of rounds and he's not even an endurance-sprinter.

My reasoning was based on actual numbers so it's not retarded at all. The gap is clearly shrinking, so it is entirely non retarded to conclude that at 10k Cuffe would win.

No, because numbers were provided for both runners, it shows Cuffe's abilities as well as a comparison between Cuffe and Abbey. "Cmon man" yourself and learn to critically think. Have you never taken a stats class?

Emelia Gorecka is the favorite - she is younger than both and faster over 5000m (15.07). Why isn't she listed as the one to beat?

In the last 400 of the 3000 D'Ags closed 1.28 seconds faster than Cuffe. In the last 400 of the 3000 D'Ags closed 1.62 seconds faster than Cuffe. Doesn't that show an advantage for Abbey as the distance gets longer

You guys are stupid, the person who has the endurance in this case relative to the 1500m and championship style races is who has a faster 5k... Not only is Aisling's 15:11 slightly faster than Dags 15:11 PR, but her seasonal best is too, and don't give me crap about Mt Sac was tactical because if the race was 20 secs slower than her PR why wasn't she able to outkick the other two girls? So obviously, when Mt Sac was tactical (like a champ style race) she couldn't kick OR maybe low 15:3x's is her potential... just because someone ran something previously doesn't mean they're in that shape currently... Is Andrew Wheating a 3:31 1500m runner right now? Is Katie Flood a 4:11, 8:55 girl right now? See? Right now, as much as many hate to admit it since Abbey is the defending 5k champ indoor and out, Aisling still has the advantage in this case... Just because her 1500m is 8 seconds slower doesn't mean that she can't outkick her and if Cuffe does a threshold kick then she might take her... Go Aisling!!!

You can't use the fact that Cuffe finished better at 5K indoors than 3K as anything other than that she is a little better the longer it gets. It doesn't say anything about Abbey, she WON both. She can't get any higher in the 5K. She is better at both speed and endurance than Cuffe. Endurance is probably pretty close but speed is not a question. I would be shocked if Cuffe even manages a 2nd at NCAA.

This Stanford grad would love to see Aisling win, but the race will not be fast. Abby ran a 4:28 indoor mile earlier this and has superior finishing speed so she has a decided advantage. I wouldn't mind if Abby won at any rate as she is a class act and set the standard which the other college girls are only now starting to match.

Yes, Cuffe has a slightly faster PB and a much faster SB, but Dags is still a strong favorite. To see this we should look more closely at those race scenarios. You are right that Mt. SAC was tactical, and with a race 20s slower than her PB Dags should have closed hard. She did in fact, close quite hard (no split sorry) but she lost by less than a second to a sub-67 last lap from a savvy pro with a 4:05 PB (Meraf Bahta). Fortunately for our comparison, Bahta also ran Payton against Cuffe, and beat her by 4 places and 12 seconds, whereas she had only beaten Dags by 2 places and 0.56 seconds.

Also consider the timing; Dags lost on speed 6 weeks before NCAA's, while Cuffe lost on strength 4 weeks out. Considering that she is gearing up for a big summer with her pro debut and that she was still trudging through snow well into March, can we really blame Dags for peaking a bit later? Why not give her the benefit of the doubt with her four 5k titles and her 4:08 this season? In order for Cuffe to win she will probably need to drop Abbey before the bell, which no collegiate has done in Abbey's entire college career. Please don't bet on Cuffe with odds any higher than 10:1

This makes no sense. It shows Cuffe got better as the distance went up. So it implies SHE has better endurance than speed. But it really doesn't say anything about Abby. She is at the ceiling. You can't do better than 1st. Maybe she was holding back? We can't know her limits when she wins. Especially if she waits and then out kicks everyone. You are penalizing her for winning both times. She got closer in place. Great. If Abby was anything other than 1st both times, we could maybe make a comparison. But you can only say Cuffe gets better in longer distances and says nothing about about Abby except is the BEST in the NCAA at BOTH distances.

You just can't come to the conclusion that since Bahta ran 31 seconds faster 2 weeks later that just somehow carries on over to the way Abbey would do... and just in case you guys didn't know, Aisling negative split this race pretty good, she went through 3k at 9:10 and closed in a 6:01 last 2k with a very fast last lap... I really hope she can get in to some DL races cause she could possibly run a little faster...

My second thing is, Hassan Mead only has a 3:41 1500m PR and he ran 13:02 almost outkicking Ben True, and you saw how much of a kick he had coming around the curve, he didn't let the other runners like Lamong (3:32 1500m PR), Jäger (3:36), Derrick (3:39) get to him... Ben True only ran 3:42 1500m last year, but at the USA 5k champs he ran his last 1500m in 3:40 breaking his own PR at the end of a 5k! At the USA 15 championships he dropped a sub-4 last mile to beat Chris Derrick, was his 1500m PR irrevalent in him running a sub-4 last mile? And tbh, I don't think True could do better than a 3:42, maybe 3:38 at max...

Aisling probably won't be able to do much more than a 4:16, but that's not even that close of an indication of who will win the race... Aisling didn't finish that far behind Dags at NCAA's (less than 2.00 seconds) and that was back in early march when she didn't have a bunch of 15's under her belt, I'm sorry, but for right now, I have to say Aisling has the upper-hand... Abbey has had plenty of races where A) her kick hasn't worked B) she has faded of the back... Aisling is on a streak right now, and is the race favorite!
