I think that if you're thirty, you should be able to do it. By that age, you should be mature enough to evaluate whether Junior and Sissy need a babysitter or not.

Really? I used to get home from middle school a few hours before my parents would get home from work and never had a problem or felt neglected.
12 for a couple of hours, I believe, is the law in Ontario, Canada. I'm sure it's older for overnight.
Depends on the state. I leave my 10 year old home alone for a quick trip to the grocery store, but nothing more than say 15 minutes...

PS- the state can file charges of neglect against you if you leave your child home alone before the minimum permitted age as specified by the state. So, it's best to heed the government's sage wisdom rather than exercise your own parental judgment on the matter.
