Ok, would like some thoughts from some of you guys with a lot of miles behind them. I am 47, was a middle distance runner at a top D1 college in the mid 80's--1:48, 800m. Ran several marathons in my 30's at a semiserious level. Now I just want to be able to run 25 to 30 miles a week but am having a lot of knee pain especially on morning runs. I had a torn cartilage repaired about 4 years ago in my left knee, but the pain seems to be increasing in both knees over time. Usually about a mile into the run things seem to become less painful. I have started to do more biking and cross training, but still want to be able to run at a moderate level simply because I enjoy running. Also, I am a bit bigger by running standards--6'2", 195, but not necessarily fat--I spend some time in the gym as well.
I am sure many of you have some of the same issues, so just wanted to hear your thoughts on what you do to improve your experience--running shoes, exercises, etc...
