Don't these huge planes all have wifi on them now? Isn't there some kind of uplink to a satelite that provides the wifi access? If so, couldn't someone ping the wifi access point on the plane to see if it was active?

It seems obvious that there is phone or gps info out there somewhere. The question is who has it and why isn't it released.
