There is no way that that 1500 could have been that slow. There must be a mistake, how the crap do world class athletes run a 210 half in the 15....i suck and i do that. Someone please tell me it is a bad dream.

It's an absurdly long season. There were the Brussels and Berlin meets after the Olympics, and now this. It's too much.
why are people ALWAYS surprised when they go out absurdly slow in a championship race without pacesetters?
Those world-class morons can't run fast without a pace-maker, it's that simple. The first 400 was 67, most middle-school girls could pace that. Even Stember would have been in that race. What a joke.
If any of you are ever able to qualify to run in these races, you will be able to answer your own questions. Until then, your spit is not worth the polish it is in.
I agree.
People, it's called a tactical race. These sort of things have been going on for decades and decades at the international and national levels. Get over it.
3:44 is not tactical. Tactics would involve some strategy during the early or mid-points of the race. All they did was jog 3 laps and then kick.
"tactical" is commonly used to describe a race that starts off slow because everyone is waiting for someone else to make the big move.
But even using your definition, the race was still tactical, everyone adopted the strategy of waiting and kicking.
I see your point. Next time they should just run a 400 from scratch and save everybody some time!
actually i think the 3rd lap was a 54.
it's tactical if you have the best kick. A win is a win
OF COURSE this kind of race is worthless and meaningless. However, I'm always amazed at the number of "fans" who love to trash pacesetting of any kind. While a few championship 1500s have been barnburners, many--far too many--have been stinkers like this.
You are a flaming idiot. Just because I can't dunk a basketball doesn't mean I can't say team USA sucked ass at the Olympic games. What the hell do you think journalism is? Half the guys on sports shows didn't even play a sport on the collegiate level (i.e. Chris Berman, John Clayton, Mike Lupica, Jim Rome, etc). I can't run a sub4 mile but I can say that race was straight up llama shit.
A first is a first.
y does everyone get so bothered by a slow race
I think a slow race with a blazing last 400 with 8 or 9 guys in contention is pretty damn exciting
I also think a well paced, beautifully run world record is pretty damn exciting
thats wat track and field is all about, different kinds of runners facing off and trying to figure out ways to beat each others
track and field is exciting because every race is different and every runner is different, some are front runners who take it out hard, some like to wait until the end, some are in the middle like El G who like to make huge moves about halfway in
if every race is the same, just guys stringing out behind a rabbit and trying to hang on, watching track would be even more boring than it is, the variation is what I enjoy
however, i do agree that at least in the USA there are far too many sit and kick races
just like there are far too many rabbited world record attempts in Europe
They do it for perhaps the best reason: they're smart. If you push the pace you might get tired out and then if someone has a good kick they can overtake you. Why do you think that alen webb ended up second at the olympic trials semi; he didn't want to get tired out for not only the end of that race but for the finals, it's all tactics.
Given the recent discussion about this race and tactical races in general, Heshko's quote after his victory(see
event reports) is oh so appropriate:
“It was exactly the kind of race I expected because there were no pace makers,” said Heshko. “Nobody wanted to take the lead so the race was slow and tactical as I like them.”
at their level though, it is expected that they run a little faster than a 2:10 first 800m. Even in Atlanta and Athens Olympics the pace was 'mediocre' for the first 2laps which in these guys minds is 2:00/2:01, anyone know what the second 800m was?
Last 700m - 1:34.... at that pace the last 800 may have been as fast as 1:47, Heshko would have been similar to that in Athens (but after a 2:01 first 800, not 2:10)
This is one of those arguments where you just won't reach a consensus. Here's the litmus test. Which of these races would you rather watch?
a) Cacho's 92 1500 victory
b) El G's 3:26.00
My answer is going to be "a" every time out, but that's just me. Of course I enjoy a fast race, but I'd rather see a race that is thrilling and involves some gamesmanship/tactics over a WR attempt that takes thought out of the equation.
