I was wondering about if it really was rabbitted or not. The guy who came in last (Vroemen) ran the first kilo in 2:38 but then ended up running 9:39. Vroemen is a pretty good steepler in his own right, running sub8:15 this season so it seems like he may have been a rabbit.
Reading from the IAAF: it says that he did (Vroemen) somewhat set the pace going 2:38 in his first K of which he then gave way to Martin from Spain and Shaheen. Shaheen hauled some serious ass on that second kilometer hitting 2:36 (4 seconds ahead of WR pace at that time) but then slowed and needed a sub 62 to break the record. He tried to get the crowd into it/ showed off, and fell three seconds short. I think Vroemen might have been the rabbit or he might have said that he would do some work as Shaheen was going for 7:45 (!). But I think that if he hadn't gone by Martin in the 2nd K so fast, we could have seen a WR (if he went 2:38 for his second kilo).
I watched it. Vroemen and Martin paced it.
If there's one event I wouldn't expect a rabbit to stay in for the duration it would be the steeplechase! Laming over so many bloody barriers for no reason - no fun, that!
They did pacemaking him. The reason why they finished is to get the prize-money ( + bonus from Saheen).
