A spanish runner was DQ'd when an Ethiopian cut her off in a women's world or olympic 1500m. It's been awhile and I don't recall the exact details.

She tried to take the inside lane. You're taking a chance when you do that. If Hasay would have fallen, would people be thinking differently about the DQ? Is the lesson now that if you get stepped on it is better to fall than try to keep your balance?

Contact must 'impede' the other runner before it can be considered a DQ. If Jordan had fallen, then she would have been impeded. Jordan didn't fall and she was not impeded in any way.
If her stride was broken or even slightly altered in any way then she was impeded. One doesn't have to fall to be impeded. All of this drama begs one question- has GG herself said anything about this????

Right, thanks for clearing that up.
First of all, she only had contact with one runner, not two.
She chopped her stride to avoid Rowbury and then went around her.
Since it happened so close, it looked like contact on first viewing.
My feeling is that she had more left than she thought and was up on them before she knew it.
Gebrselassie made the boneheaded move of running up on Tanui in 1993 and El Guerrouj made the boneheaded move of running up on Morceli in 1996.
Both were clear of other runners when this happened.
Both went on to be great.
She is great bonehead company.

I don't think even Imane Merga had ever done something quite like that. And that is saying a lot. In of itself it may have not been the worst contact. But she did it free and clear of any pack and there was no point to it whatsoever. She just didn't want to go around Hasay.
She clipped her f$&king heal for Christ sakes! Did anybody actually watch the race?
And to that effect where are all the DQs from the men's 3000?
Does Salazar have fifty different Letsrun handles? What the hell is going on?

As I said on another thread, Europeans, and the rest of the racing world would find this DQ laughable.
Now at least we know why everyone thinks US track and field is a joke.

Let's look at Imane Merga, shall we?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkoPeM-5S7s20011 WC 5000m final.
One lap to go, Merga runs on the inside of the rail to pass people a couple of times and causes contact.
200m to go, he passes on the inside again, bumping a Kenyan.
Then with 100m to go, he goes from lane one to lane three to try and block Lagat form passing him and even sticks out his arm to help with the block.
Merga finishes 3rd, Lagat 2nd. Mayabe Lagat had a shot at Gold.
Merga did get DQed for this.
Does what GG did look this bad?
If you look at this race (and the two Oxy races that are linked elsewhere on these boards) you'll see that GG subscribes completely to a simple mathematical proposition: the shortest distance from the start line to the finish line is along the rail.
You don't need to parse this like the Zapruder film. There was incidental contact, the kind that happens in track races. In tennis, they use the term hindrance. Hasay wasn't hindered. She was fading. Hasay should refuse the Polish trip, no pun intended. This is Zola Budd II. Salazar is Slaney, and Gabe is Zola.
Stupid racing all around. She deserves to be disqualified. Does not deserve to go to Poland - period.
As I pointed out. Merga did all shenanigans in a pack when he has a legit right to force some contact to get to a place. What he did at the 200M mark was nothing compared to what GG did. Merga of course was DQd for running outside the track, which is a whole other type of running out of control. That 2011 WC race isn't the worst I have seen Merga.

GG will be disqualified at World's.
If I was Grunewald, I would be embarrassed to even run at worlds. It's obvious with all the evidence that she is a dirty runner and should not be representing the USA in good faith.
Clearly she was hardly in control of herself at the end of that race. She was bordering overstriding with that kick and I think it was more of a matter of not realizing how much was left in the tank than poor racing etiquette. That's not to say it wasn't poor etiquette, but there was nothing of ill-intent.
Last week in my state meet nearly the same thing happened to my teammate in the 1500 meters. It wasn't intentional, just a hard move. On tight indoor tracks it is especially hard to make moves. Not to mention that no matter how slow that race starts out anyone starts to break down a bit towards the end.
Come on you pussies. Have you ever run indoors? It's hard to pass without contact. You have to accelerate in crazy bursts. If someone is dying while you are surging, you often bump them. I've never seen someone disqualified for a tap like Gabe gave Hasay.
Honestly, Hasay needs to start running marathons ASAP. I've never seen someone as good as she is with so little kick. It's bizarre.
