Can we now expect that any domestic race ending in a losing NOP result will henceforth lead to a frivolous DQ? (Following closed-door meetings between Nike and USATF to overturn actual officials' repeated decisions, of course.)
Just wondering.
A Duck, what do you think of the new normal?
Slight flaw with this analysis, namely with the Bumbalough situation.
From what I saw, Bumbalough basically paced for 2k, and then shut down. Neither Salazar nor Nike had anything to do with that DQ (moreso because Bumbalough is a Nike athlete to begin with; it makes absolutely no sense for them to get him DQ'd when he doesn't even affect the results and only makes them look bad). I don't know the precise rules of USATF on this matter, but I do recall that in the 2012 Olympics, Makhloufi was originally DQ'd because he basically jogged his 800m heat to save himself for the 1500m. I.e. Bad sportsmanship (he appealed this later).
I would think that the reasoning behind Bumbalough's DQ would be something similar, as the officials probably put 2 and 2 together at some point and realized he most definitely wasn't there to compete. He just made it a bit too obvious.
The Grunewald situation is something else entirely. I don't believe Hasay has the right to be on the World's team, but I also do not believe that Grunewald should get away with basically acting like Merga on the track.
