Lagat has only been beaten once by a fellow American at 3000m or 5000m (Rupp in 2012). He made everyone else look silly in the 2000m last week. He'll make the team.
Hill or Rupp for the other spot.
Lomong, Bumbalough, Heath give it a shot but come up short.
Someone out of Heat 2 is going to make it. Heat 1 will be a tactical race with a fast finish. Heat 2 has guys that need times which can only mean one thing time trial. Come to think of it I am sure Rupp would like to be in Heat 2.

Rupp is in Section 2 (the fast section). Masters is the only one in Section 1 (the slow section) who has the qualifier for Worlds and could make the team. You can't chase the standard after USAs. Most of the runners in Section 2 have the standard and those who have it won't push the pace unless someone runs a crazy fast time in Section 1, which is unlikely given the field and the race being at altitude.

Why are the two of you talking about sections of the 1500m in a thread about the 3000m (which only has one section)?
Rupp probably won't even run the 1500m if he makes the 3000m team.
Lagat's quote of "Retirement scares me" is essentially saying "I will retire when I can't run anymore". Although he is a favourite to make the squad, if Hill can come in with the same form he had at the NBIGP, there is maybe one scenario in which I do not have him making it - Rupp and Lagat dropping ~7:30.
As good as Rupp has been all winter, none of the 4 the OP has mentioned are locks to make the team, but if Hill is in peak form he WILL make the squad.
Lagat wins 3k, Hill in 2nd. Rupp, Lomong, and Leer take 3-5(not necessarily in that order).
Leer outkicks Rupp in the 1500m to win, 2nd is either Rupp or Manzano(kicking late to nip Rupp at the line).
Those are my bets.
Wait, so after one great race, Hill is sudeenly a top-tier guy, whereas Bumbi, Heath, Leer, etc. are "2nd tier guys"? I remember Bumbi beating Hill handily in a fast 5000 after losing the Worlds spot to him (and True). Lomong has not looked sharp this year. And I would put Bumbi ahead of Leer in a 3000. And Heath has been very, very good so far this year.
Lagat
Rupp
Hill
Bumbi or Heath
Bumbi or Heath

Yes. As the adage goes, you can run worse than your ability, but you can't run better than your ability. When Bumbi and/or Heath run a race threatening the best runners in the world the last 200m, they can be considered top-tier guys. Beating Hill doesn't prove that.
I honestly don't think anyone is a lock. It's the most excited I've been about a US championship in awhile.
Galen MF Rupp FTW!!!!
Anyone know how Ben True is doing right now? When Ryan Hill got 3rd at NBIGP it reminded me of this race last summer by Big Ben:
If Ben was in the 3k this weekend that would have been an even more impressive field. Hopefully he will be ready to go again this summer when fast times are being thrown down.
I'm excited to see this race as well. It's probably the deepest field the U.S. has ever had at this distance. The only thing that might deter from it are the excessive number of people they have let into the field. The risk of collisions and/or the leaders having to navigate around other runners over the last lap or two might prove to be factors in the outcome.
Should be a good watch. I'm not telling who I'm pulling to...for.
Is the 3K today? (Saturday)?
Very confused... watching 800 heats right now

Figured it out. Men's 3K is at 5:47 Eastern BUT it will be televised and the USATF stream is getting taken down prior to it. So if anybody finds a stream...

Yep, but Max wants you to watch some cows.
Enjoying the weight throw. Playing "guess the distance" with my son.
