Serious question/topic. What are the common themes in marathon training on this board? How long build up, what mileage, tempo/no tempo, work outs per week, strength training etc

Run back and forth to school. Then run a 2:04 marathon when you're 18 years old. No reason to make it complicated
Training for the marathon isn't that different than training for the 10k with one exception: you can't get away without doing long runs. Every week you need a long run of 22-31 and a medium long run of 17-20. Both of these runs should be done with at least half at marathon pace, but usually faster. Other than that I'd add one more workout a week of 5-10k pace intervals. And the rest is easy 12-16 miles once a day and 5-10 once a day. If you're feeling good you can tempo part of these easy runs, but don't detract from your 3 weekly workouts. Every now and then you can replace one of the main workouts with a race. Other than that, eat and sleep right and do some core 5-6.5 days a week. This is a general plan, modify it as fits you and you should be good to go. The most important thing is getting comfortable running a long ways.
Do you have any idea how many threads and responses there are on this board? You expect someone to list the "common themes?"
If there is a common theme it's that almost everyone here is a bench racing old fart or a young kid in high school who thinks he knows everything...
I don't think it's an unreasonable question. There's a lot of discussion about various approaches but the common theme is surely weekly volume. Probably a minimum of 70 mpw if you want to be taken seriously. Get there with doubles, stay there for about 2-3 months, and be progressive with the weekly volume at or near MP. Bake the cake before adding the icing as Malmo would say.

I was thinking the same until I read the rest of his post. It sounds like he advocates HIGH mileage with running 12 - 16 on the other days. I thought he was suggesting those long runs on the typical 60mpw that a lot of folks like to buy into.
Still sounds a bit excessive to me but more in line with his weekly mieage suggestion.
40-150 MPW
tempos and MP runs good
no time for strength training
