It took me 10 years to break 5 min by only 4 sec. 4:30 was never going to happen.

Question is self explanatory.
My first 1600 ever as a freshman in high school was 4:54, so I'm not sure when I was first capable of 5:00.
My OFFICIAL best 1600 in high school (and I've never run one since or even a mile since) was 4:32 as a senior though I DID run a 4:30 in a 6400 meter relay in that same year, so it took me ~4 years.
One race. I only ran 1 open 1600M. I ran 4:27 in a dual meet near the end of my senior year in high school
5:00 as a high school freshman. 4:27 one year later.
1600:
4:57
4:32
one year of actual training. So to answer your question, probably a little over a year with smart and dedicated training
1st meet soph year, 4:58 (1964), 1st meet jr. year, 4:31

Ran 4:58 TT in full sweats andconverse tennis shoes.
First race ever (any distance) ran 4:36. Second race 2 days later ran 4:28.
Maybe 8 days total.
