yes, i had transferred from oklahoma state to cal state bakersfield and the reporter (phil klusman) for the bakersfield californian who covered the wrestling and track team and other sports at cal state bakersfield was hit by a hammer throw at cal state los angeles. http://articles.latimes.com/1986-05-24/sports/sp-7608_1_hammer
Yeah discontinue the hammer, its too dangerous.
Gee. People are so fragile. Squish their heads and they stop breathing.
Another one bites the dust
I personally have not been
I can't read this without thinking of the guy we got hit in the back with a javelin 5 or 10 years ago. It just stuck there as he hopelessly tried to reach back and pull it out.

I was there - I didn't see it, but I heard it. Yes, seriously. It was just a huge cracking sound and it was horrific. I saw the poor girl who'd thrown it being led away a few minutes later and she was, understandably, in an awful state. Hysterical and shaking with shock (I assume). I can still hear that noise in my head, it sends a chill down my spine each time
A top American threw one through his car window and badly injured his wife. Gave up the hammer for years. Came back after a long time and made the Olympic team. I think the basic facts are correct.
what about someone getting speared by a javelin?
My college roommate was at the meet. He said the guy tried to protect himself with his clipboard. As I recall, he said the hammer was thrown by a female (not that that matters).

Not me. Anyone?
A friend of mine (a post collegiate hammer thrower trying but just failing to become elite) recently threw one onto his truck.
I'm not sure if this link will work unless you are friends with him:

If I remember correctly, there was someone who was hit by an errant hammer throw at an evening meet at North Central College in about 1980. He died a few days later. Can someone confirm this? or is my memory that bad?
i am surprised this doesn't happen more often. I saw Keelin godsey once nearly kill a kid who was retrieving javelins at Springfield College. The two sectors run perpendicular to each other and the hammer made it all the way out of the hammer sector and out to where the javs were landing. freaking scary, the kid never saw or heard it and it landed right next to him.
This guy was one of the nation's top decathletes in High School, and got hit in the head in one of his first collegiate meets.
A very good 800 meter runner I ran with a few times at the U of Arizona around 1968 (I wasn't going to school there) got hit in the head and badly injured by a discus a year or two later. I'm not sure what happened to him.
Dangerous events like that should not be held near people or a track.
I was at a meet a couple of years back where an official was one step too close to the net. A rookie threw it into the net and hit her in the face. The net slowed down the hammer so all it did was fracture her eye socket.
Actually, I remember being at the meet but not at the track when it happened. It was the 1983 NCAA Division 3 Nationals. It was very sad.
By the way, he was running on the track when it happened.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
