I am of the point of view that humans (even trained athletes) are working nowhere near their genetic potential and that it would be possible to keep 2 sports at a very high level. Possibly alternating which sport they compete at the top in each year.
I understand training principles and some coaches including Peter Coe thought that recovery time should be spent sat down at full rest (not even walking up stairs) otherwise the training effect will be lessened through poor recovery but I think an athlete who utilises the overlaps between the sport wisely eg strength and conditioning work/diet/general lifestyle/stretching. and then does the fine tuning for each sport would be able to do it it's just that most don't have the drive and vision to do 2 sports.
It has been done by athletes like Adam Gemili and I don't simply think he is some sort of superman.
Let's take an example of athletics and tennis. Could David Rudisha and Andy Murray work at each others sports enough that in 3 years they could swap places? I believe so. What do others think?
Runners have such great all round fitness and Seb Coe says it is the foundation of every sport. So why does no one work on these foundations?!
