I feel like there are two schools of thought when it comes to workouts. One is that you should "leave something in the tank" and never kill yourself in workouts, and that you always want to save that extra gear for the actual race rather than using it up in practice. The other is that workouts should be as hard if not harder than the race itself, and that the only way to become faster is to push your body to that limit in practice.
Obviously, there are variations based on where the person is at in their training cycle, their own strengths/weaknesses as runners, etc. but overall do you agree with this? Which philosophy do you think is more effective?
