I have some new balance shoes that were white leather "athletic shoes". They were big, clunky, heavy, inflexible, and shoes that were just generally horrible for running or walking. I ran in them for about 4 months and my knees are still paying the price.
I've been helping kids in India for 15 years get medical treatment. Last year my minimalist name brand shoes broke down in the 115 degree temps of the Bombay dust, dirt and rains, so I donned my Teva sandals and didn't miss a day or mile of training for the last two months I was in country. One hour runs at 3am and no injuries or stress issues either. Thanks Teva.........
Ran my very first 10K (road with gravel sections) in indoor court shoes. Actually not bad, lightweight with minimal heel-to-toe drop.
Once ran 22 miles home from work in loafers when I forgot my running shoes. I ran a couple of 50 mile races in some Nike shoes that I think were meant more for retro fashion than running. I run in water socks sometimes. I'd like to pose a related question: Does Puma make any shoe that's not a fashion shoe? I have two pair of Pumas that I run in.
My college teammate showed up for cross country in bowling shoes... Does that count..?
When I started running in high school I used indoor soccer shoes. They weren't too bad, but after a while it wasn't enough support.
I also raced my friend in an 800 wearing adidas sandals once. That race was intense, my legs were shaking after because of the effort it took to keep the sandals on while running.
First and only race of high school: 800m in Puma skateboarding shoes.
Actually a pretty good flat:
2:12
My first competitive race at age 10 I ran a 10K in white Nike High tops with a blue swoosh.
I once ran (as a commute) 20 miles roundtrip in Sperry Topsiders without socks. My feet got all cut up. It was a really stupid idea...
Sometimes I wonder how fast I could run an 800 or mile in PF Flyers. Last year I did a short jog in NB 574's for the heck of it.
Ran my first marathon in Beltsville,MD earring Converse All-Star low cut gym shoes. Ran 2:52! Is that a record?
I know of a local elite runner here in Utah who races in Crocs. He says that one pair has over 2,000 miles on them.
I've run several times on trails with soccer cleats when I've forgotten to throw my running shoes in the car and I've been at the soccer fields all day either reffing or watching my kids play. They felt fine.
Anton Krupicka used to run in the Puma H-Street:

Although it's primarily intended to be a casual shoe it doesn't seem like an unusual thing to run in. That is until you consider that he was putting in 200 mile weeks on them and would put 1000-1500 miles on a pair.
You guys must be newbies. We were rockin' the Puma H Streets around 2003-2004 and all kinds of street shoes, back when racing flats sucked and minimalist shoes didn't exist yet (and everyone thought we were crazy). Anton was hardly the first to do so.

No, I just didn't want to mention the crowd the H-Streets were originally associated with for fear of this thread getting derailed.

HAHA Yes!
Keds in the late 60's. Took me over a year to find out that there were shoes designed for running.
