people on the boards are always saying (especially of people who have never really broken through with big performances, or ran up to the expectations of others) "runner X is really talented, he/she just needs to stay healthy/train consistently/get in the right races, etc and he/she will run fast times".
can anyone quantify what they consider "talent" in a distance runner? the ability to step on the track and run sub-XX.X for 200m or 400m? to train for a few weeks and go run XX:XX in the 5K? to run X:XX in a half or full marathon off less than X miles per week?
or is it just one of "you can't explain it, but you know it when you see it"-type things. maybe the runner has a particularly smooth, powerful stride, or an ability to change gears quickly that others lack, or a particular build, etc.
