It seems like great runners are hailed for being good because they are "hard workers." I'd like to put forth the notion that dedicated, average runners go through the same amount of effort and pain as the elites but simply didn't get as lucky in the genetic lottery.
It just seems unfair that the greats are probably only great because they have a high VO2 max etc.... due to genetics. I'm not saying they're not determined, gutty, or anything. I'm just saying that running seems to be a sport where we applaud characteristics that some people are born with and others without.... I guess that a lot of sports are this way, as well as music and art. These people aren't "special" human beings... they are just chemically attuned and genetically talented at what they do.
