Rowbury and WC 1500m

It is a shame, especially if it was a drug reason she pulled out, it could just be injury of course.

What rules technicality was it? And how did Rowbury not make the team in a slow 1500 trials? Boxed in or something?

It's a shame for the USA as she has a great chance in the 1500 this year along with Simpson, aregawi the main gold threat. Why replace her place with some ppl who might struggle to get 4:05 in a fast race, for various reasons (it looked to me like Cain has burnt out from a tough long season, maybe rest has fixed it to wcs).

The technicality was her finishing 4th at USTAF in the 1500 and third in the 5000.

She chooses the 5000 for the guaranteed spot and forfeits the 1500 alternate spot.

I suppose she could have declared intentions to run the double at WC's and then had a chance to grab Moser's spot and then give up her 5000 spot.

My guess is that the technicality has something to do with declarations and/or intent to compete in one event or another. At this late date, unless Rowbury had declared in both events the 1500m was probably off the table per IAAF rules.

Just because NOP pulled a seemingly unethical move and kept Moser's condition (whatever it may be) on the DL, it's probably too late for Rowbury to shuffle her events, with the only option being to go with the 1500m alternate, in this case Brown.

I'm sure if there were a way for the USATF to make things go their way that they would pull the necessary card. It can't have been easy getting Brown to Moscow on short notice, but they have gone to that length.

I'm now in Moscow.

I said to Robert, "That's good for Rowbury" and he told me she couldn't switch.

Why didn't USATF declare her in both events?

She could now cancel the 5k and let whoever that alternate is run the 5k while she runs the 1500. She just ran 4:01 and is in great shape.

I think USATF probably declares athletes in the events that they, or their agents, indicate they are going to run. At some point there has to be a declaration date when Shannon dropped the 1500 and declared in the 5000m only, since there seemed no chance of racing the 1500m.

She would not have wanted to double, if it happened to come to that, which it would have now that Moser is out. What BATC really wanted was for Shannon to race the 1500m and for Chelsea Riley to make the 5000m team.

Just like at any level, if you allow athletes to add and drop events up until gun time, it turns into a game of strategy and guesswork instead of simply pulling on the singlet and racing.

The "technicality" was the deadline for the US to declare its team. At that point Moser was on the team, and Rowbury wasn't the alternate in the 1500, Brown was.

The US could not have declared 2 alternates in the 1500 because you can only declare 3 + 1 alternate (plus a DL or WC champ, if applicable).

Moser would have had to have dropped out before the deadline to declare your team, which she didn't do apparently because she was hoping her hamstring would improve.

Rowbury's odds would have been better in the 1500, but I'm still excited to see how she'll do in the 5000. She might be reaching the time in her career where its good to start exploring longer distances anyway.

The technicality was probably that the US had to name one alternate, and since Rowbury was running the 5000, the US named Brown. And THERE WAS NO DRUG REASON. One person posted that she refused a drug test. That person was lying. Yet now it somehow becomes "reasonable" to suggest it drug related.

What if Rowbury had gotten 3rd at USATF in both events?

She would have had a choice right there which event to choose.

I assume she would have chosen the 1500 and given up her 5000 spot. She rightfully could have just taken both spots.

Now, she rightfully had a spot to take as an alternate in the 1500, being that she finished 4th there.

So, at the time of declaration, Rowbury could have been the 1500 alternate and been on the 5000 team.

Then taken the spot vacated by Moser and vacate the 5000 spot. (but maybe vacating the 5000 spot she declared for means she can't run at WC's at all)

I assume it was Rowbury's decision not to declare in the 1500 at the deadline.

Interesting thread and I think it all comes down to Moser. I've lost respect for her. If this really is a hamstring injury then (as someone recovering from a minor hamstring strain) I can say that she knew long ago that she wouldn't be able to race (unless the injury happened within the last two days).

The US should be able to have their best team there and if that means Rowbury runs the 1500 then Moser did us wrong.

She wouldn't have run the 5k at USAs if she had finished 3rd in the 1500.

The deadline for entries--three official entrants and an alternate--on July 29 (this according to the IAAF Team Manual, dated June 24). That was two weeks before the first heat of the 1500. Yes, in the end Rowbury should have finished top 3 in the 15 if that's what she wanted to run.

She failed to do that so she can't complain.

She already received a Bronze medal for a 4th place finish before.

I don't blame Moser for not pulling out earlier. She was just hoping to have a quicker recovery, and it didn't work out. She could have at least informally told Sara Brown so sara could start to prepare, but maybe she assumed that sara was already prepared, considering that she's the official alternate.

the good news is that brown was already planning on racing on the 10th, so she shouldnt be beat up from any workouts recently. (falmouth rr)

With four slots at worlds, you would think we could field our three best available 1500 meter runners. I don't think there is any doubt that Rowbury is one of the three best available right now and definitely more qualified than Sarah Brown. This represents failure of contingency planning at USATF that is similar to the failure to fill out the men's 5k field at nationals. The potential for this was sitting there the whole time Cory McGee was trying to get the "A", so USATF had plenty of time to sit down with Rowbury and make sure she had her options clearly understood. Athletes shouldn't have to be their own lawyers.

USATF did nothing wrong unless you have a problem with picking the team solely based on performance at nationals. On the day, Rowbury had a weak race and Moser, Cain, and McGee were better.

After nationals, Rowbury understood her options and made the right choice. It would have been stupid for her to pick being an alternate for the 1500 instead of being a sure thing for the 5000. Nobody did anything wrong - things just worked out so that Rowbury isn't running her best event.

Sure, adding Rowbury to the 1500 would make the American team stronger, but would it result in a medal for a US runner?

If the 1500 is the more stacked race, it could actually be more beneficial to Rowbury that she compete in the 5000.
