Your first 8k you will really start to feel it with about a mile to go if you are primarily a speed guy.

A lot of pain. When you hit 2 miles and realize that a HS race would have just barely started, it is really mentally challenging. That said, you figure it out pretty quick and it really helps to stick with an upperclassman who knows what he is doing (and is roughly the same ability level).
You’ll cross through 5k at nearly your 5k PR pace and then slowly begin to fade for the last 2 miles. Then you will hear the crowd cheering for the race winner at which time you will suddenly get a surge of energy which will propel you to the finish line. You can expect to run anywhere from 20-50 seconds faster at your next 8k attempt.

an additional 3K. Odd question.
run more 10ks and halfs. Compared to the marathon and even a 10K, 8ks are nothing.
You just dont need to rip it right from the start like a 5k, there's a bit more time to start moving up through the pack.
