I am from the same part of the country as Ben True and have heard that he only ran 35 - 40 mpw in high school. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone have any insight on his high school training?

He was also a national class cross country skier, not sure about his training but he wasn't just running.
Heard he was up to 100 mpw including his roller skiing.
There were a few kids from his high school on my college team, and it never seemed like it was a particularly high mileage program to me. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't run that much, but like someone said, he was a really good nordic guy as well so running wasn't all he was doing.

I've heard the low figures quoted as well. However this was back in 2004 or so on Dyestat, so take that for what it's worth...
Yeah, if anything that's an overestimate. I was on his team, and he pretty much did 25 - 30 mpw, although senior year he probably went a little higher. Just an insane natural talent to be able to do so much while training so little. When he got to Dartmouth he worked up to 50-60 mpw when he wasn't skiing, and it's been only the last four or so years that he's built up to 90-100. When he lines up for a race now, it's crazy to think how much lower his lifetime mileage base is than his competitors'. He's finally putting in the miles and seeing results. Huge upside, and the guy is tough as nails.
Yes, 04021 is correct. I know his coach is more of a low mileage guy. Not sure how much speed work he did in high school but I am sure it was quite a bit.
Just goes to show you don't need high mileage to succeed in high school as Ben's high school (Greely) is one of the top distance programs in Maine.
I ran with ben in high school. I was a sophomore when he was a senior, and if I remember correctly he was around 40-50, as we all were, for most of the year.

Yeah, in Maine...

Yeah man. Mileage is worthless. All you need is freakish natural talent, a huge aerobic base from xc skiing, and 40 mpw and you too can succeed in one of the shittiest states in the country! What an insight!
