I am going to be a freshman in college I'm on the west coast. Unfortunately due to finances I am attending a school without a team this year. I am definitely looking to transfer next year, but my reality right now is that I am running solo and continuing to train so I can stay fit and talk to potential new coaches over the next year. My family took a financial blow recently which messed up the school I was planning to attend. The coach just couldn't help out enough. So I am in this situation for now.
Anyways my question is: Can I enter and compete in college meets by/for myself? Is this possible? I obviously expect to travel and pay my own way. I am most likely going to have my father accompany me to the meets for transportation and encouragement.
I also realize this is very unorthodox. Has anyone ever done this before? Also, since I am running independently (if this is possible), then it counts as the same thing as if I was redshirting on a team right? I will still have 4 years of eligibility to run in the NCAA to the school I transfer to?
Are there any issues with this, and is there anything special I have to do? The coach at the school I was going to attend said he may be able to help out more down the road, so I'd like to run at a few meets he is at so he can see my compete and that I'm still fit.
If this isn't possible I'll just do a road race circuit, but I rather run cross country.
