Maybe the 800 and 5K?
Maybe the 800 and 5K?
Not if I showed up to the line.
could have single handedly won the NCAA team title for Bronxville

Doubt she has the strength for semis and finals.
If Mary could have done the 800/1500 double (4 races in 4 days counting semis) she would have singlehandedly beaten:
Michigan State
UCLA
USC
Oklahoma
Auburn
Colorado
Oklahoma State
Florida State
Washington
Among many others. It just gets more ridiculous.
Oh, and BTW, Mary's little 5000m jog tonight would have been good for 8 points at NCAAs. Abbey D'Agostino would have beaten her by 2 seconds.
no...the race would have been different for sure. although a Abbey vs Mary matchup would be sweet. I'd guess Abbey would take it 3k and up with a steady and grueling effort. Not sure who could out-sprint whom flat-out
would be nice race Cain v D'Agostino in 5k
Mary's ability to run for an exact time is just as ridiculous as everything else. She needs 4:05.5 for 1500 A...and runs 4:04.62. She needs 2:00.07 to take out Kim Gallagher...and runs 1:59.51. Tonight, she needs 15:46 for the USATF A...and runs 15:45.46.
You don't know WHAT Mary could do if she actually tried. It's almost as though Mary's toying with everyone. Who knows, maybe Abbey wouldn't have even had a chance in an all-out race that Mary went there to win.
she'd definitely be top 5 from the 800-10,000 in any events she chose, prob could challenge for the win in all
I think that the 1:59.51 and 4:04.62 were pretty close to top-end performances for Mary. That 15:45 was a tempo run though. Salazar stated himself that she could run 15:20-15:30, but that was not the goal.
umm no that 15:45 was not a tempo run, her last 800 was at 71 second per lap pace, down from 77/78 on the previous two laps and she barely dipped under the qualifying time by a half second. The goal was under 15:46, obviously if it was a tempo run she would have put herself well within reach of 15:46 coming into the last couple laps (with 800 to go she was on pace for just squeeking under 16 minutes), instead she kicked and had to speed up by 7 seconds per lap for two laps to BARELY get it. 15:45 was her all out.
She could have easily won the 1500. The 800 would be tough but she would have a chance on a good day. There is no way she could have beaten Abby in the 5k.

^^ This. Right on the mark.

Please folks. It's time to stop with this nonsense of comparing one runner's timed event with other runners' championship tactics.
There are no pacers at championship events.
Could Mary Cain hsve made 2 distance finals at the NCAA's?
Yes.
Would she have won any races at NCAA?
Probably not.

What? Her 1500 would be #2 in NCAA history.

Again, you're making the mistake of comparing a paced 1500 time with the (usually) more tactical aspects of a championship 1500. Top marks during the season do not necessarily translate into championship success. Also, experience more often than not trumps raw talent.
Cain needs to show that she can not just compete with the world's best, but defeat them as well. I expect she'll need to work on her finishing speed to accomplish that next goal.

What pacing?? If you will remember, the "pacer" went out in something like 58 seconds and came through the 800 in 210 or so. That was not a paced event. Meanwhile, back in the pack, it was more like a tactical race and she ran it well.... Against world class competition. She could have done just fine in the college 1500 final as well. What the hell were you watching to call it a paced event???

Cain needs to beat the world's best to show she can win at the collegiate level?

Nobody's suggesting that you can take someone's PR and just insert it into the standings to see where they would've finished in a championship race. The point is that this particular PR is so stellar that nobody in the NCAA is even in Cain's league right now. It doesn't matter if it's a tactical race or flat out from the gun. She'd kill them.
